Josh Horwitz on Guns, Democracy and the Insurrectionist Idea
This Sunday, Dec 11th, 9:15 AM
Gun violence rips apart families every day in America. For 30 years we have accepted that these tragedies will continue to occur. Can that change? Josh will detail how the philosophy of insurrectionism prevents a reasonable and fact based dialogue about guns in America. In his presentation, he will weave in a variety of secular and religious sources with important statistics and engage the audience in a wide ranging discussion of the gun problem in this country. He hopes that the audience will leave the presentation with a deeper understanding of the complexities of the gun issue and a sense that gun violence is not, in fact, an intractable social problem.
Joshua Horwitz, J.D., is the Executive Director of the Educational Fund to Stop Gun Violence (Ed Fund). Mr. Horwitz is an expert on the topics of firearm litigation and gun violence prevention, and has testified on firearm issues before the United States Congress and numerous state legislatures. He helped to develop the long-term strategy to close illegal gun markets that focused the gun control movement on firearms trafficking. Mr. Horwitz is the author of numerous reports detailing strategies to close illegal firearm markets and is a prominent contributor to the public discussion on firearms issues and technology. His publications include opinion pieces in major newspapers, the Huffington Post, the Chronicle of Philanthropy, and various legal journals. He has co-authored a book with Ed Fund board member Casey Anderson, Guns, Democracy and the Insurrectionist Idea (2009), which exposes the threat posed to American democracy by unfettered access to firearms coupled with a vibrant anti-government movement. Mr. Horwitz is a graduate of the University of Michigan, received his law degree from George Washington University, and is currently an Associate Faculty member at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health where he teaches Public Health Advocacy.
The morning's event will include a delicious bagel and lox breakfast starting at 9:15 A.M., with Mr. Horwitz's presentation beginning around 9:45 A.M.
General admission is $10, or free with Brotherhood membership (annual dues cost $45; spouses can join for $35; dues are free for new Temple Isaiah members). Patriots vs. Broncos Tailgate
Sunday, December 18 at 4:00 PM
Tebow vs. Brady anyone? An up and coming Broncos team on a roll hosting a Patriots team that is among the conference leaders, but still has questions. On a December afternoon where it may not quite feel like winter yet, but it is still December and the playoffs are approaching, and the game should be meaningful for both teams' post-season positioning. Sounds like a good time for a Brotherhood tailgating event.
Join us at the Temple on Sunday December 18 around 4:00 PM (kickoff is at 4:15, and we'll be there setting things up starting at 3:15) when we'll get the game up on a big screen, and can enjoy the game surrounded by food and friends. We'll provide munchies and drinks, and while we will not be grilling for this one, we will try something new and order in Thai food for the crowd by halftime. If you'd like to bring along your own food and desserts to share, the more the merrier.
If you can, please RSVP to brotherhood@templeisaiah.net to let us know you'll be coming, and how many of you there are. If you don't RSVP you'll still be welcome, but getting a preview of the headcount will help our planning a bit.
