“Why Chanukah: a Journey through Jewish History”
with Hebrew College Rabbinical student Steven Lewis.

Since it began in the second century BCE the meanings of Hanukah have shifted to meet the spiritual and political needs of different communities. We will talk about how the meanings we bring to our Hanukah commemoration compare with those of the Maccabees, the early rabbis, and secular and religious zionists. Through this exploration we will reach a deeper understanding of the festival itself, and the way our tradition is transformed. There is no charge for this workshop.

Our Torah is fundamentally an extended conversation about what is a sacred community and how to create it. We will explore selected passages from Torah and Prophets to unfold the vision of what is a sacred community and how to get there. We will also have a specific emphasis on the teachings of Isaiah on the vision of what it means to be in a sacred community and how we would act towards one another and our relationship with God.
