TELEM*: Jewish Youth Making a Difference
(Service Learning)

Coordinator: Rebecca Winters

TELEM students and educators will work with our partner organization Minuteman Arc, to help support the social needs of adults with developmental disabilities living in group homes. The class includes learning about individuals with different abilities through text study, activities, guest speakers, and movies. We will visit residents of the Minuteman Arc homes, where students will build friendships and create memories through conversation and weekly activities.  TELEM offers the opportunity for students to develop their leadership skills and ability to connect with people from all walks of life.  Former TELEM students have been inspired to pursue careers in teaching, nursing, occupational therapy, and social work and have noted TELEM to be a life changing experience for them.

From a recent TELEM graduate: I cannot express in words how much this experience has meant to me. From day one, I felt the extraordinary welcome and happiness from the clients (adult residents). Just being able to see their beautiful smiles brightened my day, and changed my perspective. I have learned a lot about patience and understanding of all kinds of people…from watching them dance, share, and play cards we created an amazing bond. I really admire their optimistic outlook on life, and I learned so much from them. Tuesdays became the highlight of my week!

From a parent of a Minuteman Arc Consumer (parent of an adult resident): Thank you so much for bringing your students each week.  My daughter didn't want to come home to visit me last week because your group was coming.  It means so much to me to know that my daughter can have an independent life and enjoy herself without me.  She is always talking about her volunteer friends.

*TELEM is a program in partnership with the Jewish Community Relations Council (JCRC) of Greater Boston and the Minuteman Arc of Concord MA.  The TELEM Seminar creates an environment and structure that enables the next generation of Jewish leaders, civic activists and advocates to create change through community-based social action and Judaism. As TELEM participants, students (and their families) are also encouraged to take part in the Minuteman March Community Walk and Fundraiser held in May. Students can receive community service credit for this class.
