Welcoming the Stranger: Refugee Support

Social Action's Welcoming The Stranger Committee, is taking on projects to provide support to refugee families.

Our first key program is to partner with IINE (International Institute of New England), a 501c3 organization that has been helping refugees resettle in the Boston area for more than 40 years. With leadership and structure from IINE, we will be providing a support team focused on specific refugee families, the first of which will be arriving in the Boston area in November 2017, most likely from Iraq, Syria, Burma, or Congo. The support team will work together to address many of the most urgent issues (housing, job search, English language skills, computer literacy/access) that this family will confront in the first six months of their life in America.

We are asking for the support of Temple Isaiah congregants in two important areas:

  • “Hands On” direct support: Some examples of help that will be needed include providing transportation to a doctor’s appointment, or teaching skills such as computer familiarity or how to perform tasks like using public transportation, writing a resume, interviewing for a job, operating an ATM, or signing up for a library card.
  • Financial support: We need to raise $4,500 to supplement the (meager) support of $1125 that each refugee family receives from the government to cover the cost of housing, food, and all other expenses for the entire family during the six month program.

If you have questions or are able to spend a limited amount of time to help refugees, please contact us IINErefugeesupport@templeisaiah.net.

If you are able to support this Isaiah effort financially, checks can be made payable to Temple Isaiah, (please write "Social Action Committee — IINE refugee support" in the memo line), and sent to Temple Isaiah, Attn: Social Action, 55 Lincoln St, Lexington, MA 02421.
