Welcoming the Stranger

"The stranger who resides with you shall be to you as the native among you, and you shall love him as yourself, for you were aliens in the land of Egypt; I am the Lord your God."                      - Leviticus

Temple Isaiah is an Immigrant Justice and Sanctuary Supporting Congregation. The following are some of our ongoing initiatives to support newly arrived refugees and undocumented immigrants at risk of detainment or deportation.

Resettle Together

This subcommittee provides support to a newly arrived refugee family in partnership with the refugee resettlement agency, the International Institute of New England. For more information, please contact Eric Cohen,

Sanctuary Support

Our Sanctuary Team are volunteers who support and protect an undocumented immigrant who is in imminent risk of being detained and deported and who is currently in sanctuary at the First parish Church in Bedford. Volunteering involves attending a training session and being at the church for a 4-hour shift during the day or evening or an 8-hour shift at night. There are two volunteers at all times. Training sessions are held regularly at First Parish Church. To learn more please, contact Lesley Litman or Laura Derby.

Immigrant Rights - Tzedek Reflections

This subcommittee is interested in looking at and addressing the systemic injustices facing the undocumented immigrants and refugees here in Massachusetts. Our goal is to make a difference by advocating for legal protection from harassment and from unjustifiable arrest, detention, and/or deportation by immigration enforcement agents. To that end, we are working with more than a dozen Boston-area synagogues who have created a support network to learn about working for immigrant rights and fair and decent treatment of immigrants in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. Temple Isaiah has been part of that group, called Tzedek Reflections, since its inception. For more information, please contact Lesley Litman.
