"Men may change their clothes ... [but] they cannot change their grandfathers." So wrote Jewish philosopher Horace Kallen in 1915. A century later, this is no longer quite true. We live in a world where identity is increasingly a matter of choice rather than a function of birth. This year, the LIJS Jews in Film course takes boundary-crossing as its theme. The films we will discuss center around how modernity challenges Jews to become a "choosing people," not simply a chosen people.

Jonathan Krasner is excited to be teaching about Jews in film for the third consecutive year in the Lexington Institute for Jewish Studies. Jonathan is the Jack, Joseph and Morton Mandel Associate Professor of Jewish Education Research at Brandeis University. He has written extensively on American Jewish culture and the history of American Jewish education. Jonathan and his family live in Lexington, MA, and are members of both Temple Emunah and Temple Isaiah.
