The Religious and the Scientific: In Conflict or Complementary?

Tuesday, June 15, 2021 5 Tammuz 5781

7:30 PM - 8:30 PM

Most of us believe firmly in science, and we view the world through the lens of science and rationalism. But does this evidence-based approach to the world fit with our Jewish practices and beliefs? Does a scientific world view relegate spirituality to the realm of superstition? Does finding meaning in prayer make you irrational? Is religion for the weekend and science for the rest of the week? Do modern technology and ancient divinity conflict? How does your work, especially if you are a STEM professional, inform your theology or vice versa?

Join us as we kick off conversations about these challenging questions.  We will start with a panel discussion. Isaiah members Lynn Stein Melnick, Mitch Tyson, and Michael Pearlman will share personal observations about whether and how their religious and scientific views of the world interrelate. We will then break into small discussion groups so that you can join the conversation.

This program will be followed next fall by additional Scientists in Synagogues programs, thanks to a grant from Scientists in Synagogues, run by Sinai and Synapses with fiscal sponsorship from Clal: The National Jewish Center for Learning and Leadership.

Please RSVP below so that we can plan.
