March 15 Update

Barry Tuber

Last week was more than a bit hectic and stressful, and I wanted to write this evening to give you an overview of the week ahead for our community, especially for those of you who may be at home and are looking for ways to connect with others.

First of all, let me be clear that all activity, including classes, programs and meetings that were scheduled to be held at Temple will not be taking place there. In fact, staff and clergy will be working from home themselves, and the building itself will be locked, although there will be a maintenance presence in the building from time to time. This is how we will be operating for the next two weeks at least, and we will re-assess where we are a week from now and let you know the plans at that time.

Although the building will be closed, there will be lots of opportunities to connect. I am including a list of a this week's activites below, and while some programs are being cancelled altogether or postponed until later in the year, we are working to make as much available using technology as we can, including live streaming of services on our web site and Facebook, video messages from our clergy several times a week via email and online, and classes and meetings using Zoom (the video conferencing service that can be accessed from your computer, mobile phone, or regular old telephone). The web site will be the main place to see the details of what is going on, but we will continue to send our Weekly Digest, and communications from the religious school, and the occasional general email like this one.

And even though clergy and staff will not be in the building they will still be accessible and working to stay in touch. All calls made to the Temple voice mail will be promptly returned, and emails to staff and clergy will also be followed up on. Please visit our web site and see the staff directory  and our page listing lay leaders and committee chairs for contact information.

If you are homebound or quarantined and need help beyond just the contact, please reach out to us. Our Bikur Cholim committee stands ready to connect you with volunteers who can help, and we are also working on launching an online tool which will help volunteers see what things need to be done and enable them to raise their hands. More on that later this week.

How to use Zoom: if you have not already, please download the Zoom software by visiting this page: https://zoom.us/download and clicking the download button for “Zoom Client for Meetings”. After installing the software you will be prompted to login, and you can click the link to “Sign Up Free”. A free account is all you will need to participate in any of the programs that we are organizing. And we are organizing Zoom training, please email me about that for now if you need it.

Many of you may already have experience using Zoom; if you do and are interested in helping moderate some of our programs, please reach out, as we have found that running a class or program is much easier if two people are doing it together.

Here are some programs that will be happening virtually over the next couple of days. Some require pre-registration and are listed so that the attendees are reminded that they will in fact be happening. And look out for the Weekly Digest on Thursday, which will include more.
